Moving to Austin and need a place that will let you plug in your car? Or thinking about making the switch to an electric vehicle and not sure if the apartment lifestyle will support that or not? They are good questions. You care about the environment and want the world to be better, and finding a place is hard enough without having to wonder if you will end up stranded on the highway because of your choice.
First off, there are several sites and apps that can help with finding recharging stations. Solving EV, Plugshare, and Chargepoint are probably the most well known. Details will vary a lot but it’s possible you might be able to get your charging done during errands and work throughout the day and not have to depend on apartment charging stations at all.
It’s likely that that won’t be good enough. Or you may just want to be sure you have ready access just in case. Understand you may have some challenges. It is very expensive to retrofit an apartment to support EV charging. It isn’t just adding a few outlets. It requires adding new transformers and other expensive updates. This means that you are largely limited to new construction. The good news is that there are still options available in most places around town.
